Join us for a hands-on portrait session focused on using both on-camera and off-camera flash, combined with available light, to create dynamic, natural-looking lifestyle portraits.

In this workshop, we'll explore how to create beautiful, professional portraits using a simple on-camera and off-camera flash with a model in front of the camera. You'll learn how to shape and control light using tools such as a flashlight and reflector to enhance soft, glowing tones and create depth and dimension.

We'll begin with a clean, controlled lighting setup and gradually experiment with subtle adjustments to see how small changes in light position and reflection can dramatically affect the mood and character of the portrait.

Whether you're new to studio portraiture or looking to refine your lighting skills, this session offers a practical and creative experience designed to build confidence and technical understanding.

Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in London.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

    The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

    This was my second event with Jamal who is a great teacher and very informative and was great to pick up a few more tips to add to in photographic journey. The group had talked with him at the end about doing a portrait session but in a studio which I would be very interested in. I look forward to joining another event which he hosts.

    You can call me Jamal! I'm a creative photographer and drone pilot with a design, art, and journalism background before fully dedicating myself to photography. I hold an Advanced Photography diploma, an Art Foundations certificate, and a Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems certification for aerial photography. Based in London, Ontario, Canada, I specialize in weddings, events, creative portraits, family photography, lifestyle sessions, and aerial photography.
    Beyond capturing moments, I have experience mentoring students, leading workshops, and guiding emerging photographers to refine their skills. I aim to create a supportive and engaging learning environment, whether you're just starting out or looking to advance your craft.     This image is a Still Life Composition of "Berries, Wine and Grapes" that I created on a rainy day in my bedroom. I used no fancy Studio Lighting at all. My only light source was a hand-held flashlight that I kept moving rapidly. It was an experiment in Light Painting when I couldn't go outside to shoot.
