Introduction to Black and White Photography. What makes a good Black and White shot?

We will look at the contrast and using textures. How does the camera see the image and how do we create Black and White images in a camera or in post-production. We will look for some good examples and set some exercises.

This is a more advanced course and assumes you understand the basics of photography and controlling your camera.

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in London.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

I really enjoyed yesterday?s session and look forward to attending other sessions in future. Thank you
It was good, I learnt quite a lot from the event lead, discovered beauty and more things to photograph in this city I have lived for almost 5years.
I thought this event went very well. The fact there were only 3 participants gave the instructor ample time to help where needed. Frank gave good ideas, and inspiration. I find going ?solo? on these types of photo exercises a bit intimidating, but as a small group it confidence was better, and yet we were small enough that we didn?t hinder our subject matter. We more or less blended in.

The meeting was wonderful and useful. The host was very helpful and kind. Thank you, London Photography. Thank you, Mark.
Very informative. Maria was helpful in letting us know what we would be doing and what to look for. As we toured around she pointed out things that we should be looking at and for. Although the meet up was not designed to be a technical session she was able to answer questions that came up and provide suggestions for moving forward.
Had a great time with Maria Fernanda. She was very knowledgeable and helped me so much with my new camera!

    Very thorough and patient explanation

Frank is a self taught photographer from the Netherlands now living in Canada. Having travelled half the world on a motorcycle nothing makes him happier to capture a moment of daily life in 1 frame that can represent a 1000 words.

Availability can be arranged at any time! Most enthusiastic about the outdoors, capturing daily life, including sports and events, in a creative way. I see the camera as a tool to capture the moments you want to remember in the years to come.

Let's use our creativity. Gear is not a necessity

Was out and about, birding, along a County road when I pulled over to allow emergency vehicles to pass by. It had been raining. I was about to leave when these flowers caught my eye. I originally thought is was wild phlox but have since learned it is Dame's Rocket. Phlox has 5 petals but you will notice this flower has only 4 petals. As I approached I saw the rain drops glistening on the petals and I could not resist, even though I did not have my macro lens with me. D850Sigma C 150-60

I consider myself fortunate to have captured this photograph on a Sunday morning in downtown London, ON. Unexpected moments often unfold, especially in street photography, showcasing a "Snapshot of our diverse world". In this image, I observed people of various colours and ages?some moving independently while others require assistance, some exploring freely while others remain tethered. I wanted tp photograph the mural itself, which is located on the east wall of the walkway, but felt the photo would be boring and one dimensional under the direct afternoon sun and began to walk away. At that moment I noticed the reflection of the mural in the glass wall of the building on the west side of the walkway.. Intrigued, I positioned my camera near the glass and waited. The sun was lowering in the winter sky creating longer shadows. The volume of foot traffic was encouraging, being a

?This past Father?s Day I went to a family farm cidery with my oldest daughter. The drinks were good, the company was great, but the best part was the farm?s commitment to keeping wild, native plants for pollinators. This little bee found a delicious clover and I got this macro shot.?

Arches is considered a dark sanctuary meaning using light painting is not allowed. I went to do Astro Photography in June of 2021. This was taken approximately 2am when the Milky Way rose to the center of the arch. While it is a dark sanctuary, someone was hiking on the other side with a headlamp giving me just a touch of light painting to outline the arch. I held the wide angle lens open approximately 13-seconds, ISO 1600.
